Tubby Todd Baby Skincare Review: Is the Price Worth It?

Everyone wants to know if Tubby Todd is worth the hype. As one of the most expensive, yet highly-rated and well-known baby skincare brands, I had to find out if the rumors were true!

Tubby Todd Bath Co.: I had heard of it in bits and pieces when I first became a parent to a newborn baby, and then forgot about it. It wasn’t until I was pregnant with my second that moms in my circles started talking about the benefits of this sensitive skincare brand for babies, toddlers and just about anyone.
In this review, I’ll dive into my thoughts about Tubby Todd skincare products, especially for treating dry skin, and especially in regard to how they feel (both on my child and on myself) and the ingredients. We’ll wrap up with discussing if Tubby Todd is worth the hype!
What is the Tubby Todd skincare brand?
Let’s start off with this: some of the moms in the moms group I started said the following things when someone brought up a reference to Tubby Todd.
“I can’t say enough good stuff about Tubby Todd. My mom is even using it for her eczema, and my baby’s skin is flawless.”
“Trust me, I didn’t like the price tag; but my baby’s skin was bumpy and rashy until we started using it.”
“Everyone I know swears by Tubby Todd.”
Another mom referred to herself as a “Tubby Todd devotee.”
I think Tubby Todd is a brand you find out about via word of mouth as a strong recommendation from other moms. That’s how I learned about it.
The opinions are real, the suggestions are genuine and other moms’ experiences with it are compelling. I know moms who’ve used Tubby Todd for cradle cap, dry skin, eczema and regular skincare hydration. I now know moms who’ve used Tubby Todd for themselves, and recommended it to even more family members!
The gist of the brand is that it’s friendly, plant-based, safe, free of “crap” chemical ingredients and safe for babies, toddlers and children. What’s not to like?
Well, Tubby Todd is expensive! I’m going to dig further into my experience with the products and how I felt about them after being wary about this hyper-popular baby brand.

The best-selling Tubby Todd products I tried
I tried the Tubby Todd Regulars Bundle. I wanted to get a full picture of the brand by trying the top products first. (Note: it is available on Amazon with several size options, too)
All Over Ointment
If the word “ointment” skeeves you out, you’re not alone. But this stuff is different. It’s not Vaseline or Aquaphor, for example.
One of my friends says she lathers the Tubby Todd All Over Ointment “everywhere.” Seriously, parents go nuts for this stuff. When TT had a sale on the ointment, my mom chat groups were buzzing, to make sure everyone knew about it.

The AOO (now we’re talking in Tubby Todd abbreviations) is a plant-based recipe that is good for just plain dry, or eczema-prone skin. No one in my house has eczema to my knowledge, but given some family history, I suppose it could pop up for us as a concern one day.
How does it feel? In all honesty, it is a bit thick, but that’s because it is an ointment. I’d call it a cross between an ointment and a thick moisturizer, meaning it can be used even on newborns. I feel good about what’s in it, like beeswax. I have read that it’s a smart thing to keep in a diaper bag.

OK, what does “Colloidal” mean, though?
The word “Colloidal” on the Tubby Todd AOO container refers to the oatmeal in the product.
The colloidal (I Googled this word, and it means: “very finely divided substance which is scattered throughout another substance”) oatmeal in the All Over Ointment is free of preservatives, gluten and soy and offers skin barrier protection to relieve irritation and itching. Maybe that’s why it worked on my hands better than anything else.
How does it … smell?
Tubby Todd’s All Over Ointment is scent-free. But that doesn’t mean it’s boring! My friend told me, “Funny enough once I bit my nail after using it, and it actually tastes really sweet.”
I’m not saying to try to eat the AOO by any means (Don’t eat this, please!!!), but basically, it is neither smelly nor off-putting.
Hair + Body Wash (Lavender + Rosemary)
My first thoughts: it smells better than my own bath and body products. I use regular-people stuff like Pantene and Trader Joe’s line of bath products. This baby hair and body wash smells incredibly lovely. I love squeezing it into my Derma Frida scrubber when I’m about to wash my toddler’s hair.
I like that it’s for all of my child’s hair, face and body, as I’m a busy parent and I don’t have time for multiple bath products! It’s plant-based, gentle and lathers like the real deal. In fact, using it in the bath creates a “better” lather than my Johnson & Johnson’s baby shampoo, and, it seems to get knots out of toddler hair better than J&J.
The TT Hair and Body Wash is part of the Tubby Todd 3-step skin solution for littles (body wash-lotion-ointment).
If you’re not into the rosemary and lavender fragrance (that I personally love, but maybe it’s not for everyone), there is a fragrance-free version, as well as some limited-edition versions.

Everyday Lotion (Lavender + Rosemary)
This lotion arrived in my house at the right time: I had just accidentally purchased Johnson & Johnson’s baby lotion in the “pink bottle” - the one that smells like a highly-scented newborn. It was off-putting. It smelled strongly artificial, and I ordered way too big of a bottle for my own sanity.
So, enter the Tubby Todd Everyday Lotion: how is this different? First off, it’s made with natural avocado, mango and cucumber extracts. The ingredients include things I’ve heard of, like cacao seed butter and xantham gum.
It’s different from the Johnson & Johnson baby lotion (not even comparable), on which I referenced the ingredients label for the sake of writing this review. That one has 75% of ingredients I can’t pronounce or even spell, like “Ethylhexylglycerin” (what is this??).
Let me tell you about how it smells: it smells fantastic. And I tried it on myself before ever putting it on my toddler. It moistened the tops of my hands (which have been itching from dryness) and made them feel soft, without any oily feeling. I put it all over my toddler after the bath.

Allergens and ingredients in Tubby Todd
Tubby Todd products clearly state that they are free of gluten, dairy, parabens (preservative chemicals), artificial fragrances, colors and animal cruelty. This is great for me because I AM one of those gluten-free and dairy-free people! I’ve had concerns over lotions and skincare products with either grains like wheat or ingredients like goat milk in the past, and I’ve passed on those, giving them away to others.
For my child, I want to be as careful as possible, especially as we’re still doing allergen and intolerance testing and this is a work in progress for us.
TT products are “fragrance-free,” even though they have fragrances. That’s a little confusing, no? I read the Tubby Todd FAQ to learn that yes, Tubby Todd skincare items are free of synthetic components. The fragrances you smell are made of natural “raw materials,” which means mixtures of essential oils and extracts. I feel so much better about this!
There’s even a Newborn Arrival Gift Set that you can trust.

Can adults use Tubby Todd skincare products?
Take it from my group of mom friends. When someone asked this question in our conversation, someone immediately replied that, “The All Over Ointment is for everyone.”
And this is very nice news, because as someone who battled all winter long (and also with one of the driest winters on record), while pregnant and suffering from dry skin, I was looking for anything to help.
If you told me back when my skin first started cracking and itching that a children’s skincare brand would help, I am not sure if I would have believed you, but I was ready to try new brands and get creative.
Tubby Todd’s Mama line
During my pregnancy, I’ve tried two different belly creams/balms/oils, as the Internet tells you to start doing once your skin starts stretching. I use a coconut-almond oil, and I also use a shea butter lotion from Burt’s Bees.
But guess what: Tubby Todd’s Mama Collection includes Belly Oil, nipple balm, hand cream (for after you constantly wash bottle parts and pump parts) and lo and behold, a perfect Mama and Baby Gift Set. You bet I just added it to my list of the best gifts for new moms — ones she’ll actually use and want.
Conclusion: Is Tubby Todd really worth it?
I’ll put this in a little bit of perspective: if you realized that you don’t have to be jailed by the artificial scents of lotions and shampoos from Johnson & Johnson’s baby line (which isn’t even comparable, ingredients-wise), you can try out Tubby Todd and see that yes, your baby or toddler can smell amazing like aromatherapy, with no harmful chemicals.
Tubby Todd, according to their “About” page (which I had to read, because I’m trying to get the full picture of why it’s worth the high price tag), is created with a variety of skin sensitivities in mind. It’s a real brand with real people behind it, unlike massive corporations like J&J, Aveeno or Eucerin (despite being hypoallergenic, this company is gigantic).
Tubby Todd, for how modest its beginnings were (started by Andrea Faulkner Williams, a real mom!), has exploded in popularity in “best skincare products” and “best lotions for babies” lists everywhere online.
With all those rave reviews, it’s hard to ignore! I think what I can say is, if you have the spare change in your budget, try it, and make sure to do it first by grabbing a “bundle” or “duo” so that you can save. Or, just make Tubby Todd an essential for your baby registry!
