In the days leading up to my becoming a mom, I swore to myself that I’d be a “cool mom.” I think every woman on the cusp of parenthood makes this promise to herself, and I was no different.
How do you become a cool mom? It’s all in the shoes. It’s all in having those everyday sneakers that goes with everything you want to wear. Little did I know just how much I’d be standing and walking as a new mom (and a seasoned mom!). Literally, I am walking and on the go all the time. And I need great sneakers that are also cute, for this wild lifestyle.
In this list, you will find my top picks for cute mom sneaker ideas, as well as favorites from my “mom friends”—thanks, ladies! Hope you enjoy the inspiration and find your next comfy pair.
Nike Flyknit Sneakers
My #1 pick for cool sneakers for moms (and I give you my blessing to wear them with jeans) is the Nike Flyknit Run collection. A theme throughout this article is how petrified I’ve been all my life of wearing “sneakers with jeans” (also known as “sneans”—don’t ask), but somehow, Nike Flyknit styles and its woven fabric-esque look have toned down all my anxieties.
The Nike Flyknit Infinity 3 and the Nike Flyknit RN4 (which you’ll see in my Nike custom sneaker design review) have both become parts of my mom attire. I wear Nike Flyknit to daycare pickup, to the supermarket, to the zoo and the playground and when we take trips. They come in men’s too (my friend’s husband wears them exclusively), so they make a cool shoe for dads.
I wore them in Mexico City when we walked six miles a day. In this photo, you can see how they look with my “Mom Jeans” (this is not a joke) from Mott & Bow! I also frequently sport them with leggings, like on a day out in NYC.
My note for shopping women’s Nike sneakers is that if you want a good deal and a discount, check the prices on all the color choices of any given shoe. Chances are that there are sale colors, as I’ve seen this most of the time!
A big thank you to Nike for providing me with all my Flyknit sneakers. The brand has only provided me with product; all thoughts and photos are my own.
Vessi Courtside Classics (waterproof sneakers)
I got into Vessi waterproof sneakers as a “travel sneaker” right before I got pregnant. I got Vessi’s version of rain boots (the “Weekend Chelsea” rubber-soled bootie shoe) and they became my go-to for wet days. Then I branched out into the waterproof Vessi snow boots (they’re cool, I promise) and the waterproof hiking boots, too! You can see all about it at my Vessi travel shoe review.
But at long last, Vessi came out with a “courtside sneaker”. And they’re the types of sneakers that go great with jeans: wide leg, barrel leg, straight leg, boot leg, whatever leg your jeans are. They’re a style inspired by the 90s and they remind me of something retro from yesteryear. They’re not going out of style anytime soon.
As a bonus, they are 100% waterproof, just like all Vessi footwear! When I’m stuck in the rain with my stroller, these will keep my feet dry AND look nice.
Quince Leather Everyday Sneaker
We are big fans of Quince in this house (have you seen my guide to Quince for petites?) and I was intrigued to see that the company started making shoes. Of course, the Leather Everyday Sneakers on-trend, outrageously affordable for what they are (leather) and they come in a timeless never-go-out-of-style design.
What I like about a classic white or black flat sneaker is the ability to dress it up (with a cute dress or maybe a silk maxi skirt, if you can pull it off) or dress it down with sweats, leggings, joggers or athletic shorts. There is no wrong way to wear iconic sneakers like these as a mom who needs (and wants) to look good, in a jiffy.
Allbirds Wool Pipers (and new styles)
Allbirds, as you’re likely familiar, had their debut with the Tree and Wool Runners a few years back. Since then, the company has exploded with shoe designs, many of which are really cute as everyday mom shoes!
Want to expand your cool mom sneaker horizons? I tried both the Tree Runner and the Wool Pipers, but I recommend my friend Kate’s Allbirds favorite, the Tree Skippers. They’re cute! You can see how my Wool Pipers look with jeans, which is mostly how I wear them.
To explore more Allbirds styles for women, I recommend going to the Allbirds website. If you shop through our link, you’ll get a free pair of nice socks, too. (It’s worth noting that Allbirds is a certified B Corp with verifiable environmental practices.)
Nike Structure Sneakers
I was looking for a different style of sneakers that I could really sink my feet into for stability. That’s right: I don’t have great feet—my right foot is “flatter” than my left, I think I have weak ankles and I sometimes get calf aches when I run. I did a lot of research and found that Nike Structure styles could help out.
But are they cool sneakers for moms? I think yes! They’re a bit more of a traditional look, but because of that, I think they go great with leggings, joggers and most jeans. Plus, they’re meant to provide supportive cushioning and “steadiness,” so if you’re on your feet a lot as a busy mom, try ‘em out.
Thank you to Nike for sending me the Zoom Structure 25 sneakers to try out for this article; all opinions noted here are genuinely my own.
New Balance Classics (574 & 327)
There’s nothing like a classic New Balance shoe with the big “N,” some of that vintage-style leather trim and the foam right above the sole. I’m talking about New Balance 574 Core and 327 Classic retro sneakers for moms ready to embrace this throwback trend!
I think these were formerly known as like “dad shoes” and “mom shoes,” but the latest fashion statement is to eat up these classic vibes and pair them with high-waisted jeans, leggings, joggers or wide-leg denim. I don’t think it’s possible to go wrong.
Note: for sizing, NB recommends going 1/2 a size UP, so try that when you order.
Veja Volley Sneakers
These iconic sneakers that came from real volleyball shoes come from Veja, another B Corp brand. As I learn more about Veja (thanks, Kate!), the more I see the value in these organic sneakers that go fantastically with straight-leg jeans, skirts, dresses and the works.
The Veja Volley is for all seasons and I can see why my friends dig these a lot as a “cool mom shoe” that get better with time.
Adidas Gazelles
The Adidas Gazelle sneaker is another winner for “mom shoes” that lets me kick back with jeans (and any height of socks) and stay casual and chill. With a leather outer and rubber soles, these lace-up flat walking sneakers come in a surprising array of fun colors, both bold and pastel.
They’re a sporty platform shoe inspired by 70s training shoes, so the style and design will last forever. You can easily find them on Amazon.
Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star Lift Platform
We all know the epic Converse Chucks: I had them in high school and threw paint all over them at summer camp. But now, with a few extra trimmings like EVA cushioning and an OrthoLite insole, these can be a comfortable casual mom sneaker that goes with anything.
Whether high top or low top, Chuck Taylors go with cropped jeans, high-waisted shorts, T-shirt dresses and leggings (I think this describes all my daily mom outfits). They’re also pretty affordable at the Converse website, where you can choose a Standard or Wide fit.
Golden Goose Sneakers
Also coming as a recommendation from my friends, Golden Goose sneakers are high fashion for fashionista moms! They’re Italian sneakers crafted with metallic leather and sparkly glitz and they add pizzazz to any outfit.
There are also styles I’m more drawn to like the chunky white leather-and-mesh athletic sneakers that remind me of gym shoes from the 90s. The Ball Star shoes are flat classics with a signature star and what’s best is they look better with time (just like wine).
Vans Classic Slip-On Checkerboard
With including the Vans Classic Slip-On Checkerboard, I’ve now listed most of the shoes I wore in high school that have come back as cool throwback sneakers for my mom friends and me. I’ve seen so much of my generation donning my all-time favorite funky sneaker from Vans.
When you shop for the Vans Slip-ons, keep in mind that they’re unisex, so make sure you toggle over to “Women’s” when choosing your women’s shoe size.
Because these slip-on sneakers are so unique, they can be dressed up or dressed down, and best of all, thrown on without tying any laces. For me, this is perfect when I’m also dressing my toddler and then dashing out of the house, whether to daycare or a birthday party. You know what I mean!
