I found out about Finisterre, and the timing was just right. I had been looking for new brands to explore, and these days, I’m focusing on brands that make high-quality and timeless styles, with a commitment to sustainability.
So, how’s the Finisterre brand for women? What I thought was a jacket brand is actually a company making coats, fleece, pants, base layers, swimsuits and even underwear. The designs are woodsy-chic, surfer-cool and laid-back enough for weekends or hanging out.
In this review, learn about what you should know about Finisterre’s women’s line before buying.
Thank you to Finisterre for gifting me some top products in women’s jackets, raincoats and clothing items. All thoughts in this review are my own and are not sponsored by the brand.
Key things to know about Finisterre’s women’s collection
- Large array of products, with timeless styles that you can wear for life.
- Impressively inclusive sizing, from XXS to 4XL (in select products). For the majority of products, available sizes are XXS-XXL. (Be sure to use the Size Chart)
- Impeccable quality: Finisterre’s jackets are among the best I’ve owned, and the pants and sweaters will stand the test of time.
- Prices for Finisterre clothes are not cheap, yet they’re reflective of environmentally-friendly B Corp production practices that mean a lot to me (and hopefully to you).
Women’s products: my highlights
I like that the Finisterre women’s collection is full of muted colors, versatile pieces and modest designs.
What I tried
- Women’s Yarrel Jean - 26R / Washed Retro Indigo
- Women’s Stormbird Waterproof Jacket - XXS / Heather Mist
- Women’s Lapwing Insulated Jacket - XXS / Olive
- Women’s Mora Knit Jumper - 6 (XXS) / Navy
What I liked best
All of it. I immediately started wearing the Lapwing jacket around the house, and appreciated how buttery soft it is, in the inner lining. I put it on with the Yarrel Jeans and said, “Wow, this is a CUTE look.”
The knit sweater (”jumper”) is superior quality, and I liked how that paired with the blue jeans as well. Lastly, the Stormbird jacket was exactly what I’d hoped it would be: a “heavier” raincoat than the thin rain layer-windbreaker I currently own from Jack Wolfskin.
Women’s products: review
Here’s how my trying went with each best-seller I got from Finisterre.
Women’s Yarrel Jeans
I was glad to see that in my choices of Finisterre’s pants for women, the main style was this updated barrel-style pair of wide-leg jeans. I never know how jeans are going to fit me, as I run petite at 5’2.” I was overly glad though, that when I put on the Yarrel Jeans, they hit an acceptable place at my feet, and fit in the waist.
Overall, I think these run true to size, but I would note that they are tightest at the waist (not hips). They are a VERY high-rise style, even higher than most high-rise styles I own. The waistband is practically at the base of my ribs.
Regardless, they look incredibly “updated” and on-trend, but down-to-earth. I think they look like an upscale pair of earthy jeans, if that makes sense. I think they’re accurately in line with what I want to be wearing at my age and in my current lifestyle. Five stars!
(As I often wear petite sizes and I’m 5’2,” you’ll notice that these pants do actually run long on me and they gather at the ankles.)
Women’s Stormbird Waterproof Jacket
I’m very happy with this raincoat. It fit on the first try, which means I ordered right yet again. It does run sort of long, but that’s what I want in a raincoat, to keep more of my body dry, yet still look flattering.
I’m also satisfied with the weight of it: it definintely does not feel like a windbreaker rain layer, and it’s also not a warm jacket. I can wear a simple long-sleeve tee under it, or a light sweater, and that should fit with ample room to not feel tight.
It’s a technical jacket, with features to keep water out and keep warmth in. I used the hood the first time I went out in the rain wearing it, and I adjusted the Velcro sleeve cuffs as well. Two features I also like are the exterior zipper pocket at the chest, and the one inside, too.
Overall, it’s one of the more flattering and slimming rain jackets I own, which I really appreciate, because I haven’t had good luck with fits until now. There’s also the Rainbird jacket, which Dan has, and details in his Finisterre men’s apparel review. The jacket is more or less the same for the women’s version.
Women’s Lapwing Insulated Jacket
I am also a big fan of this ultra-lightweight down jacket. I hadn’t been actively seeking yet another super lightweight down jacket for fall and warm winter days, but I have to say, Finisterre scored high yet again with a flattering fit. The other packable down jackets I own run too long and look goofy.
This one has a semi-cropped style and just like Dan mentions in his Finisterre Firecrest Jacket review, I’d be comfortable wearing it inside at an event or a gathering and not taking it off.
Women’s Mora Knit Jumper
I’m glad I tried a merino wool sweater from Finisterre. In fact, it’s so wooly that I thought it was “regular wool,” not merino—but merino is a plus.
It’s warm and cozy, and I wore it first on a cool morning in the fall. In these photos, you’ll see how it fits with the Yarrel Jeans.
I was impressed with the fit: sweaters always tend to be big on me, but not this one! Given that I got an XXS, I’m going to assess that it runs big, because a true-to-size XXS would be tighter. I’m not mad, though: it feels good to have a product that really fits.
This is the first sweater like this that I’ve owned, and I’m ready for it. At first glance, the style seems unisex, but it has a feminine cut and crop. Frankly, I like the boyish charm of it, and it’s never going to go out of style.
More Finisterre women’s products
A few other products from Finisterre that I’m eyeing for next time are:
- Waterproof Parka: Given what I know now about the fit of Finisterre jackets for women, I have good feelings about how this parka would fit and which size to get. My current parka is too big!
- Recycled Fleece Vest: I love a good fleece-y vest! I wear a vest as soon as the autumn chill sets in, and until spring.
- Tops & T-Shirts: These are exactly the types of tops I live in: relaxed day-to-day tees in muted colors and made from recycled materials. On any given day, you can find me in tops like these, so I have to get my hands on the ones from Finisterre.
Does Finisterre have sales?
Yes! The Finisterre sale section is called Last Chance. You can save anywhere from $10 to $80+ on various products, in women’s apparel and unisex accessories like bags.
If you want to get into the Finisterre brand at a discount, I definintely recommend checking out the Last Chance sale page to see what you can snag.
Finisterre’s sustainability missions
For me, one of the top reasons to be proud of shopping for Finisterre products is the company’s commitment to sustainability. This is big for me: the fact that Finisterre uses “Leave No Trace” packaging and uses recycled materials in the products makes the company stand out in my mind.
I learned about Finisterre’s commitment to sustainability at the Impact page of the website. If you’ve seen my other apparel reviews like my Wild Rye apparel review, you may know how much I value brands that are focusing intently on recycling, compostable packaging and sustainable production.
Where to shop for Finisterre
The best place to shop for Finisterre women’s products is the Finisterre website. By shopping directly at the Finisterre site online, your shipment will get the unique packaging that I saw with my order: packaging that uses recycled paper with water-soluble material. It can be recycled at home, and the plastic wrapping for the garments is ocean-safe and biodegradable.
Buying Finisterre products at other retailers will likely not benefit from this environmental-friendly treatment, and I noticed that sizes and available colors are also limited on sites other than Finisterre’s.
I hope this helps!
